20 cancer cases in women with faulty breast implants

Posted December 31, 2011 15:57:17

French health authorities say there are now 20 confirmed cancer cases in woman with faulty breast implants, but say there is no proven link between the two.

The French Government announced earlier this month it would pay for 30,000 women to have the faulty implants, produced by Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), removed.

The implants have been found to contain non-medical grade silicone filler, and have an increased risk of rupture.

French consumer health agency AFSSAPS said that as of December 28 it had registered 15 cases of breast adenocarcinoma, the most frequent form of breast cancer, one case of breast lymphoma, two cases of other lymphoma, one case of lung cancer and one case of acute myelogenous leukemia in women with the implants.

But the agency stressed that no link had been established between cases of cancer and having PIP implants.

It said the number of breast cancer cases in women with PIP implants reported to date "remains lower than the rate observed in the general population".

Agency chief Dominique Maraninchi put the figures in the context of the general population, pointing out that "one woman in 10 has, has had or will have breast cancer."

Health officials had earlier said eight cases of cancer had been registered in women with the implants, including one woman who died from a rare form of large cell lymphoma.

AFSSAPS said it had also registered 1,143 ruptures and 495 inflammatory reactions in PIP implants.

Up to 400,000 women around the world have received the sub-standard implants by PIP.

PIP was shut down and its products banned in April 2010 after it was revealed to have been using non-authorised silicone gel that caused abnormally high implant rupture rates.

SafeSync for Business

Individuals and businesses alike face the problem of how to access files without physical access to the device that houses the data. A range of cloud-based services have stood up to solve this problem, some with better results than others. Trend Micro's SafeSync for Business (there's also a "for Home" edition) is one such problem-solver. It's well suited for businesses that intend to pay for at least 20GB of storage no matter what solution they use, although it doesn't offer any particularly compelling features or a sexy interface design, while its competition does.

The biggest name in the synchronization game is Dropbox (4 stars) (an Editors' Choice), an excellent and widely used service among individuals in particular. Dropbox comes to my mind when I think of the consumerization of IT. Many people love Dropbox for personal use, and, they're willing to use their personal account at the office to get work done in a pinch, either covertly or overtly. TrendMicro's SafeSync for Business is, as its name suggested, targeted squarely at the business market proper, rather than rogue employees. However, now that Dropbox has dropped more competition into the SMB ring with Dropbox for Teams (a business-end solution that leverages the system so many already know and love), TrendMicro will have to compete head to head with Dropbox for business customers, too.

Another one of our favorite file-syncing services, and also an Editors' Choice but with less name-brand recognition, is SugarSync (4.5 stars), which can't be beat for supporting every major and minor platform, from Symbian to Windows Mobile to Linux. SugarSync also wins consumers over by offering 5GB free (Dropbox gives away 2GB). But doubling SugarSync's free space with a whopping 10GB for any user is CX (4 stars), which doesn't support as many system as SugarSync but is nearly as good in every other way and sports an attractive web component.

Among all these excellent options, it's tough to find unique characteristics of SafeSync that truly set it apart. It checks all the basic boxes: syncing across devices, general sharing features, a dedicated folder for drag-and-drop file upload. SafeSync's Web interface looks drab compared to those of Dropbox, CX, and SugarSync. TrendMicro touts invisible advantages, though, like the fact that it owns its data center and thus can guarantee 99.9 percent service availability. Another benefit: SafeSync provides pretty tight controls over network processes, such as upload and download speeds.

Space, Prices, and Supported Systems
File-syncing companies have been slashing prices recently with all the fierce competition in the market, and TrendMicro is competitive in this area. SafeSync's one-year plans look affordable for a small business: 20GB for $23.95; 50GB for $53.95; and a whopping 100GB for $89.95. But a two-year contract offers even more savings: 20GB for $35.95; 50GB for $77.95; and 100GB for $119.95. Mind you, these are one-time payments, not recurring monthly or annual charges. For 100GB, Dropbox and CX both charge $19.99 per month, or $239.88 for the year. SugarSync's going rate for the same package is a one-time fee of $149.99. Syncplicity, another service we've tested, is the most expensive, doesn't even advertise a 100GB plan, but does have a one-year 50GB option for $15 per month.

Support for a variety of operating systems couldn't be more pertinent to a discussion of file syncing, as the whole point of the service is to give you access to your files anywhere. SafeSync hits the big four: Windows, Mac, iOS (3.0 and later), and Android (2.1 and later). It does not support BlackBerry or Windows Mobile, though. If you or your business rely on those platforms, or even Symbian (unlikely) or Linux (more likely), stick with SugarSync, which has apps for them all.

Firefighters chase arson fires in Hollywood area (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? An arsonist swept through the Hollywood area under the cover of dark early Friday, torching vehicles whose flames ignited nearby houses, including one once occupied by Doors frontman Jim Morrison.

The four-hour onslaught started shortly after midnight and sent firefighters scrambling to douse fires in at least a dozen locations in Hollywood and the neighboring city of West Hollywood. In nearly every case, the fire started in a parked car. Authorities were preparing for possibly another round of fires, while searching for a suspect.

Dozens of people were rousted from their homes, power was disrupted in several neighborhoods and Los Angeles police were put on alert in the Hollywood area. One city firefighter was treated and released from a hospital after a fall from a ladder while battling one blaze. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities were interviewing witnesses and looking for any video footage that may have captured the person, or people, responsible for the spate of crimes. Investigators from four agencies met for a strategy session, while Los Angeles officials summoned investigators from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

We will "be preparing for what may be coming tonight," said Los Angeles County fire Battalion Chief Tom Sullivan.

Fire officials couldn't say whether the rash of fires was the work of a copycat. There was a series of other arson fires early Thursday, also in Hollywood. Two people have been arrested and remain in custody for those blazes, officials said.

All of the fires on Friday were in a 2-square mile area and most were in densely populated neighborhoods.

One of the homes was in Laurel Canyon, where Morrison and his girlfriend once lived, neighbors said. The winding road was the inspiration for the Doors' hit "Love Street," and the house was listed for nearly $1.2 million earlier this year, according to real estate website Zillow.com.

Sandy Gendel, who owns a nearby restaurant, said he heard explosions from what he later determined were likely car tires. He saw flames 30 feet high coming from the deck of the former Morrison house and a gutted Mazda Miata.

"It was just like a towering inferno," Gendel said.

Jeff Dorman, who lives in the neighborhood, said he and his wife were awakened by noise in the street.

As he and his neighbors watched the firefight, he said they worried about embers floating toward their houses because they are so close together. They also were concerned about a firebug being loose in their neighborhood.

"One spark could have been a huge problem," Dorman said. "The fire department did a fantastic job."

City Councilman Tom LaBonge said the arsonist is mostly targeting underground parking in mid-century type apartments that have no security gates and putting some kind of incendiary device under cars.

"These are not trash can fires on street corners. We are just a second away from tragedy," he said.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jaime Moore said car fires spread to adjacent buildings in at least three cases, and investigators were looking for patterns that might link the blazes.

Hollywood is served by the Los Angeles city police and fire departments. Adjacent West Hollywood is a separately incorporated city served by the Los Angeles County fire and sheriff's departments.

LG Prada 3.0 sashays over to South Korea because Android phones are so hot right now

Do you take your Android phones with an extra dose of designer? Then LG's Prada 3.0 is probably already on your radar, ready to mix and match with your walk-in closet of wardrobe options. This respectably specced, luxe update is right on target to hit South Koreans' manicured mitts tomorrow, with first dibs going to SK Telecom and a release on KT to follow on January 5th. The usual two-year contract pricing applies for both operators, but contract-averse users can also snag the stylish handset for 899,900 won (about $778) outright. That's the high price you pay for fashion (and a minimalist UI overlay), but at least this forward-looking device is set to fatten its figure with Ice Cream Sandwich in Q2 of next year. Of course, by then, it'll already be terribly gauche to own one anyway.

Tonight

Bulls at Kings

The facts: 9, CSN, 1000-AM.

Updated: December 29, 2011 2:17AM

SACRAMENTO ? Derrick Rose has spent the first quarter of the Bulls? first two games trying to get his teammates involved. No more.

The message has been delivered. Coach Tom Thibodeau only needs one word to describe what he wants Rose to do to opposing defenses in an effort to jolt his team out of its offensive doldrums: Attack.

Thibodeau is unleashing his MVP.

?We?re a lot better when he?s aggressive,? Thibodeau said after practice Wednesday at the Golden State Warriors? facility. ?It puts enormous pressure on our opponent?s defense. When he?s attacking, we?re getting easy baskets, we?re getting to the line, he?s getting people into foul trouble. It helps us in so many different ways. When we talk about him attacking, we want him attacking on both ends. We want him attacking on defense, also. That?s when he?s at his best. Right now, he?s trying to get others involved early, which is good, but when they put two on the ball, that?s good for us. That?s easy offense.?

Rose isn?t going to fight it. He already had diagnosed the problem after the 99-91 loss Monday against the Warriors. He only has attempted four shots in the first quarters of the first two games. He only has been to the free-throw line twice.

?As long as we win,? Rose said when asked if he minds being a score-first point guard. ?My teammates realize that. The shots I take, I don?t take that many bad shots. They know for us to win, I have to attack. Coach already told them. Everybody on the team is cool with it and comfortable with it. That?s all I have to do.?

The Bulls watched game film from last season, and Rose was all over the place, driving to the basket, collapsing the defense, kicking the ball out to wide-open teammates and leading the break. They looked at film of the first two games this season against the Los Angeles Lakers and Warriors, and Rose was trying to get his teammates involved or settling for long jumpers.

More shots by Rose means fewer for forward Carlos Boozer, but Boozer was emphatic about the team being at its best when Rose is a blur on the way to the basket.

?He?s a natural-born scorer,? Boozer said. ?We know that. One thing he?s trying to learn as he continues to grow as a player is how to use his teammates. Honestly, he?s been doing a great job of trying to figure it out, but at the same time, his first instinct is to score. We?re a better team when he attacks and makes plays off what he sees. I?d rather him stay aggressive.

?Let?s be honest, what person, what team have you seen that has been able to stop it? Nobody. We?re a better team when we?re attacking and playing fast and playing off his instincts because teams are at a disadvantage because he?s going to make a play or a shot or set something up for one of us. Him staying aggressive makes us a better team.?

Thibodeau wants the entire team to play more aggressively in an effort to get more layups, second shots and free throws. Too often players have been settling for long jumpers. He remembers what it was like to try to defend Rose and an aggressive Bulls team when he was an assistant with the Boston Celtics and wishes that experience on others.

?I know what it?s like when you?re sitting on the opposing bench and he?s attacking,? Thibodeau said. ?That?s something you don?t want to see. His shooting has improved greatly from his first year, but if you?re sitting on the opposing bench, that?s what you?d rather have. You don?t want him attacking and getting into the paint and breaking you down.

?There?s nobody faster in the league from end line to end line, so we?ve got to take advantage of that.?

Knowing when to take over a game and when to involve teammates is a balancing act. Rose is still learning. Having only a two-week training camp and two preseason games limited the time spent with his teammates on the floor, but he doesn?t have to worry about that balance now that the decision has been made for him.

?I?ll do it the same way I did it last year, where they follow after me,? Rose said. ?The first two games in the first quarter, we were kind of sluggish. We didn?t start off well. The only thing I can think of between last year and this year is this year I shot less shots in the first quarter. Last year, it was at least eight or nine shots in the first quarter just to get a groove going. That?s the difference.?

Rose seemed delighted by the idea of being told to score more.

?That can easily be fixed,? he said with a grin. ?Me shooting the ball, me attacking, trust me, I?m all right.?

Knicks edge Celtics 106-104 on Anthony foul shots (AP)

NEW YORK ? Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points, including a pair of free throws with the game tied and 16 seconds left, and the New York Knicks survived a seesaw season opener Sunday to beat the Boston Celtics 106-104.

Amare Stoudemire added 21 points and Toney Douglas had 19 for the Knicks, who led by 17 in the first half, trailed by 10 in the fourth quarter, then pulled out a thrilling Christmas victory in the delayed opener to the 2011-12 season.

Rajon Rondo had 31 points and 13 assists, nearly leading the Celtics back without an injured Paul Pierce. But Kevin Garnett missed a jumper just before the buzzer, the kind of shot Boston always seems to make against the Knicks.

Brandon Bass had 20 points and 11 rebounds in his Celtics debut, and Ray Allen added 20 points.

Garnett finished with 15 points. He and Allen had a sleepy Christmas start, with Rondo keeping the Celtics in the game until they got going in the second half.

But it wasn't enough against the Knicks, who withstood a potentially serious knee injury to first-round pick Iman Shumpert to beat the team that swept them out of the first round of last season's playoffs.

Pierce has a bruised right heel but hopes he can return Tuesday when the Celtics visit the Miami Heat.

Even without him, the Celtics fought back to tie it at 69 on Rondo's layup midway through the third quarter. They surged ahead by eight going into the final period after Bass scored the final six points, then extended it to 89-79 on Bass' jumper to open the fourth.

Anthony tied it at 100 on a 3-pointer with 3:25 to play, and it stayed tight until he was fouled on a drive with 16.3 seconds left, making both for a 106-104 lead. Rondo grabbed the rebound of Marquis Daniels' potential go-ahead 3-pointer to give the Celtics a final chance, but Garnett was off on a jumper, then appeared to shove the Knicks' Bill Walker away.

Coming off their first winning season in a decade, the Knicks added a defensive presence by signing Tyson Chandler away from the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks and have loftier expectations than they've seen in years. The original NBA schedule had them opening against Miami, but instead they got a chance to see if they've closed the gap against the team they hope to unseat atop their division.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers even compared the Knicks to the Lakers because of the length along their front line with Chandler in between Stoudemire and Anthony. Though the Celtics won all eight meetings last season, the Knicks have been listed some places as the favorites in the Atlantic Division, which the Celtics have ruled since their Big Three came together in 2007.

"It's possible. Right now, anybody could win the division. Everybody knows how optimism kicks in before the season starts, but then once reality sets in after the first month of the season, we'll see," Pierce said before the game. "But it's definitely a possibility. I mean, they have the talent, but we have the talent, too, So I can see that."

D'Antoni was careful to keep the expectations low, saying the limited amount of practice time before the season started means it could be a few weeks before all the new players are used to each other. The Knicks won't even have one, Baron Davis, for a while as he recovers from a herniated disc in his back.

Shumpert was expected to be a key until then, but he sprained a right knee ligament in the second half.

The Celtics are a changed team as well, with the retirement of Shaquille O'Neal and the season-ending loss of Jeff Green for surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm. And they will face questions about how their veteran core can navigate the tight 66-game schedule.

But the acquisition of Bass from Orlando for Glen Davis paid immediate dividends, as he showed a nice midrange jumper when he wasn't busy keeping balls alive on the glass.

The first game since renovations began at Madison Square Garden included the usual cast of celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Chris Rock and John McEnroe, and some new confusion, as at least one Celtics player had to ask how to get to the court from the new visitors' locker room.

The Knicks led 34-23 after one and extended it to 49-32 with 7 1/2 minutes left in the half on a pair of free throws by Chandler. But the Celtics shot 62 percent in the quarter, getting it back into single digits before New York took a 62-52 lead into halftime.

Notes: Rivers said Pierce may come off the bench when he does return, since he's had only one practice so far. ... The Knicks were without Mike Bibby, who dressed but didn't play because of a sore back. Reserve Jared Jeffries was lost during the game to a sore right calf. ... Stoudemire provided pregame breakfast to MSG staff in appreciation of the support in his first season with the team.

(AP Photos/Maneesh Bakshi, File)

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) ? The Sudanese army said Sunday that it killed the leader of the main Darfur rebel group in fighting earlier this week, touting his death as a key victory against a powerful rebel force that once threatened Sudan's capital.

Khalil Ibrahim led the Darfur-based Justice and Equality Movement, or JEM, the most organized and effective military force in Darfur, the western region torn by conflict since 2003. The group did not join a peace deal signed last year in Doha, Qatar between other Darfur rebel groups and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir's government in Khartoum.

The military said he was wounded Thursday during a military offensive in North Kordofan state, which borders Darfur. The government said he died of his wounds Saturday and that rebels quickly buried him. The government did not say how it confirmed his death.

JEM representatives could not immediately be reached for comment. If Ibrahim's death is confirmed by the group, it would be a serious blow to JEM, which has on several occasions threatened to bring down al-Bashir's regime in Khartoum by advancing toward the capital.

Sudanese Information Minister Abdullah Massar said Ibrahim's death sends a message to rebel groups "to listen to the voice of wisdom and join the peace process."

"Our doors are open and the Doha agreement is open," Massar said Sunday.

Darfur has been in turmoil since 2003, when ethnic African rebels accusing the Arab-dominated Sudanese government of discrimination took up arms against it. The Khartoum government is accused of retaliating by unleashing Arab militias on civilians ? a charge the government denies.

The conflict has tapered off since 2009, but the U.N. estimates 300,000 people died and 2.7 million have been displaced. The International Criminal Court in the Hague has issued an international arrest warrant for al-Bashir for his alleged role in crimes against humanity in Darfur.

Sudan's Information Minister told reporters Sunday that 30 people were killed with Ibrahim in the clashes. An army statement carried by Sudan's official SUNA news agency said Ibrahim and several associates were killed in Wad Banda, about 440 miles (700 kilometers) west of Khartoum in the North Kordofan region, which borders Darfur.

"The army cut all paths for the group as it was retreating and trying to cross into South Sudan to reorganize it forces," said Sudanese army spokesman Col. Sawarmy Khaled. "Our gallant armed forces were able to kill rebel Khalil Ibrahim along with some of his associates."

South Sudan seceded from the north in July to become the world's newest nation.

Fighting in Wad Banda had flared up in the past few days. On Saturday, the Sudanese army said Darfur rebels attacked three locations in neighboring North Kordofan, killing an unspecified number of civilians.

JEM has not claimed responsibility for the attack. However, in a dramatic push in 2008, hundreds of JEM fighters drove through the remote western region and attacked Khartoum's western outskirts. More recently, JEM spread its armed presence from Darfur into North Kordofan.

A security officer with the United Nations Mission in Darfur told The Associated Press that JEM mostly operates out of North Kordofan state and no longer has an official presence in Darfur. He said UNAMID officials have not confirmed Ibrahim's death. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

This year, UNAMID had nearly 26,000 troops and police stationed in Darfur, making it the largest UN peacekeeping operation.

Salma Turabi, daughter of longtime opposition leader Hassan Turabi, said she was at a gathering of mourners at Ibrahim's home in Khartoum when police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Sudan state television broadcast images of Khartoum residents outside military headquarters, waving Sudanese flags and celebrating the news of his death.

Ibrahim is believed to have recently returned to Sudan after years in exile in neighboring Libya, where he enjoyed the patronage of Moammar Gadhafi before the longtime Libyan dictator was ousted and killed in October. Sudanese officials said the JEM has been trying to regroup since losing Gadhafi's reported support for the rebel movement.

Ibrahim once served in al-Bashir's government before joining the rebellion. He refused to join a peace agreement signed in Qatar and backed by the African Union that was meant to provide a basis for a cease-fire, power sharing, equal distribution of wealth and compensation for displaced people.

"He completely refused to come to the negotiating table, he never joined the peace talks," Ismail el-Haj Musa, Sudanese deputy speaker of the council of states, told the pan-Arab Al-Jazeera TV on Sunday. "He committed acts against the state."

On Sunday, Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamad, Sudan's interior minister, described the death of Ibrahim "as a message to all rebels and those carrying arms, calling on them to the negotiating table to resolve issues and reach a peaceful resolution for the best interest of the country," according the semiofficial Sudan Media Center.

PFT: Adrian Peterson suffers torn ACL and MCL

San Diego Chargers v Detroit LionsGetty Images

Well, that was some Christmas Eve of football.

The Lions are headed to the playoffs. Tebowmania imploded. The Giants beat the Jets, which made Rex Ryan very unhappy and set up a Giants-Cowboys rematch?next Sunday night for the NFC East title.

So after all the fun, where do the playoff races stand? Let?s take a look.

Four spots remain.

The last wild card spot in both conferences remain up for grabs. So do the NFC East and AFC West division titles. One more spot could be decided Sunday night.

This Sunday night still matters.

With a late field goal, the 49ers narrowly?won in Seattle 19-17?to keep their hopes alive for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. That means Green Bay still has to go all out to beat Chicago on Christmas in order to clinch the top spot in the NFC.

San Francisco can clinch a playoff bye if they beat the Rams next week. (They can also get the bye if New Orleans loses one of their remaining two games. The Saints host the Falcons Monday night.)

A Packers win Sunday night would also clinch the final NFC wild card spot for the Falcons.

Only one NFC East team will make it in.

The Eagles are out. The winner of Cowboys-Giants gets a division title and a home playoff game. The loser is out of the playoffs. Simple.

Patriots clinch bye, have inside track for No. 1 seed.

New England?s 17-point comeback win over Miami puts them in good shape to have homefield advantage. The Patriots clinched a bye on Saturday, and they will get the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a home win over Buffalo next week.

The Ravens and Steelers still have a shot at the No. 1 seed. The winner of the AFC North will earn a bye. Speaking of which . . .

Ravens and the Bengals play the biggest AFC game next week.

If Baltimore wins in Cincinnati, the Ravens get a bye. If the Bengals win, they clinch the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoffs.

The Steelers will be rooting for Cincinnati to sneak in. Pittsburgh can still win the division and get a bye if they beat the Browns and the Ravens lose. The Steelers still have an outside shot for the No. 1 seed if they won and both the Ravens and Patriots lose.

All the AFC North games will be at 4:15 p.m. ET. If the Bengals lose, things get complicated. The Titans, Jets, and Raiders are also alive for the last wild card spot if Cincinnati falls. Oakland could also win the AFC West.

The Bengals could even lose and make the playoffs if they end up in a two-way tie with the Titans at 9-7.

The Jets need a miracle.

Rex Ryan?s crew doesn?t look like a team good enough to win in Miami next week. Even if the Jets win, they need a ton of help to get into the playoffs.

Here?s what needs to happen for the Jets to make it: They need to win and they need a Bengals loss, a Titans loss, and a Raiders or Broncos loss.

The Titans also need a complicated combination of events to make it. Their scenarios are listed right here.

Texans are the No. 3 seed in the AFC.

This much we know for sure. They will avoid the Ravens or Steelers in the first round.

It?s down to the Raiders and Broncos in the AFC West.

The Chiefs and Chargers are out after Saturday?s results. The Raiders and Broncos are both 8-7. The Broncos still hold the tiebreaker advantage over Oakland, so the Broncos still control their fate. They are in with a win next week against Kyle Orton and the Chiefs. How great a matchup is that?

The Raiders can win the division if they beat San Diego in Oakland and Denver loses to the Chiefs. ?Oakland also has a shot for the final wild card spot. It?s possible Oakland could win and still miss the playoffs.

To get the wild card, the Raiders would need a win, a Bengals loss, and a Titans loss. Or a win, a Bengals loss, and a Jets win.

Got all that?

Merry Christmas anyway.

NFL preview: Giants at Jets

Giants (7-7)

at Jets (8-6)

Kickoff: Noon, MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, N.J.

TV, radio: Fox, DirecTV

(Ch. 709), KTKR-AM 760

Line: Jets by 3, O/U 451/2

Series: Giants lead 7-4.

Last meeting: Giants won 35-24 on Oct. 7, 2007.

Storyline: For all the local blather over the first Big Apple matchup that counts in four years, this game doesn't move the meter a whole lot outside the New York area. Both teams have disappointed, with the Giants losing five of their last six, including an inept showing against Washington last week after taking control of the NFC East. Eli Manning is having his best season, far superior to the Jets' Mark Sanchez, and that QB edge could be decisive.

Did you know? Giants have won last four regular-season meetings with Jets.
