Kendo master Yasushi Shiba will be doing his part to help with relief efforts for victims of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan in March 2011.
Shiba is having a special book signing event from 3 to 5 p.m. tomorrow at Bestseller book store at Guam Premium Outlets and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Micronesia Mall store.
The author of Romantic Body Design will give a brief sword demonstration at 4 p.m. at GPO.
Donations from the book signing will go to cancer-stricken children who were affected by the devastation when their families were evacuated from their homes.
Shiba received a Sports Tourism Ambassador certificate from the Guam Visitors Bureau in 2010, and the government of Guam named him an ambassador of goodwill.
A practitioner of kendo since 1975, he has given eight kendo demonstrations on Guam since 2005.
What is kendo?
Kendo is the martial art of Japanese fencing, according to the International Kendo Federation, the sport's world governing body.
The formal kendo exercises developed several centuries ago are still studied today using wooden swords in set forms, or kata. The introduction of bamboo practice swords (shinai) and armor (bogu) to kendo training is attributed to Naganuma Sirozaemon Kunisato (1688-1767). This is believed to be the foundation of modern kendo, according to the federation.
Technical achievement in the art is measured by advancement in rank. First dan, for example, is equivalent to a first-degree black belt, according to the federation.
Shiba's rank
Shiba was promoted to the rank of sixth dan in 2001, and has held the title of renshi (master instructor) since 2002.
Information was provided in a press release.
