Governments Are Not Applying Religious Fairness Equally (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The Obama administration attempted to force Catholic employers to provide birth control and Christians in general to provide morning after abortion pills as part of his health care power grab, in violation of their religious values. Democrats in several states are trying to pass laws allowing gay marriage (a sacred rite, not a civil right) and Christians are being banned from renting space in New York schools.

These are the usual attacks on religion, especially Christianity, by the left. Why, then, is Islam getting another pass?

Fox News reported Wednesday that a Grand Junction, Colo., high school student had to quit singing in the choir due to the school officials' insistence that the choir sing a song praising Allah.

The song "Zikr" contained the lyric, "there is no truth except Allah."

The student sent an email to school officials outlining his objection to being forced to sing a song "worshiping another God, and even worshiping another prophet."

School officials defended the song. District spokesman Jeff Kirtland told Fox News, "Choral music is often devoted to religious themes," and that the choir "is a voluntary, after-school activity."

The Staten Island Real Time News reported that Monday was the first day of a city-mandated ban on Christian groups renting school buildings after hours in New York, where the public can voluntarily attend.

Jane Gordon, senior counsel with the NYC Law Department, stated, "We view this as a victory for the city's school children and their families. The Department was quite properly concerned about having any school in this diverse city identified with one particular religious belief or practice."

There is, however, a publicly funded purely Islamic school in Brooklyn. The Khalil Gibran International Academy opened in 2007 was aggressively promoted by New York City School Chancellor, Joel Klein, according to the Catholic News. Klein was reported to have banned Christian students from displaying a Nativity scene previously.

The Liberty Tribune reports that the miscreants and malcontents at the ACLU objected to a Christian concert held recently in Kansas City because city officials promoted it as they would with any other event and city officials kowtowed to them. There was no outcry from the ACLU in 2007 when the city installed Muslim foot baths in the airport at taxpayer expense.

The point of my commentary is not to decry the Muslim faith, as some on the left will surely claim, but a call for the fairness the left claims to stand for.

The left's misinterpretation of the First Amendment's "establishment clause" either applies to all or applies to none. Either you are against religion or you are not, no exceptions.

The loathing and bigotry of the left against all things Judeo-Christian while bending over backward to accommodate atheists and Muslims is hypocritical at best and obviously intentional. This will only get worse if Obama and his adherents remain in power.

Collectivism and progressivism are incompatible with Christianity. They seek to destroy what they can of it and usurp the rest.

Why Republicans should lay off China (The Week)

New York ? Pete Hoekstra sparked a media firestorm with his racist "yellowgirl" ad. Sadly, he's hardly the only Republican trafficking in xenophobic Beijing-bashingEarlier this month, lucky Michigan viewers of Superbowl XLVI were serenaded with a political attack ad that is, to borrow a word from the ever poetic Mitt Romney, "severely" stupid. It takes the game of China-bashing to a new level, just as Chinese President-Select Xi Jinping?arrives in the United States for a friendly visit.

The 30-second ad, put out by Michigan Republican Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra (who hopes to take on incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow in the fall), opens with a Fu Manchurian clang of a gong, followed by a young Chinese woman riding a bike leisurely down a narrow dirt path lined by rice paddies. Sashaying to a stop, she delivers a beguiling Anna May Wong smile, and speaks in a sweet voice peppered with just enough grammatical errors to bite like salt on a fresh wound: "Thank you, Michigan Senator Debbie Spend-it-now. Debbie spends so much American money. You borrow more and more from us. Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good. We take your jobs. Thank you, Debbie Spend-it-now." The scene then cuts to an avuncular Hoekstra summarizing the moral of this tale about faraway places: "I think this race is between Debbie Spend-it-now and Pete Spend-it-not." Zing.

?

America has plenty of problems that need fixing. Pretending they're the fault of some menacing Red threat won't help us solve them.

For decades, Michigan has sadly watched the decline of its prized auto industry ? a loss that has led to racially-driven anger and sledgehammers smashing Japan-made cars. It all culminated in the tragic death of Vincent Chin in 1982. Chin was beaten to death with a baseball bat by a Chrysler plant superintendent, after being mistaken for someone of Japanese heritage (as if that would have made it okay). Considering that history, the racial insensitivity of running this ad in Michigan of all places, and dubbing it "yellowgirl" in the HTML code on Hoekstra's campaign website, is simply beyond the pale.

SEE MORE: China's 'amazing' construction of a 30-story building in 360 hours

?

What Hoekstra didn't realize, apparently, was that the setting and costume used in the ad is identifiably Vietnamese, not Chinese. Indeed, the ad has drawn attention in China not for its Sinophobic content, but for its comical misidentification.?

Of course, the "yellowgirl" ad is not a single, standalone incident of China-bashing, but one of the many we have seen and will continue to see in political campaigns as well as media coverage. The disturbingly long list includes the infamous "Chinese professor" ad put out by Citizens Against Government Waste during the midterm elections in 2010, Rush Limbaugh's ridiculous mimicry of the Chinese president's speech ("ching chong, look see"), and countless attack ads in state-level elections that flash an opponent's unflattering headshot with the words "China" and "jobs" looming in the background.

SEE MORE: China's economic growing pains

?

Among the many perils of China-bashing is that it leaves voters misinformed. But it also unfairly and xenophobically blames the "other" for America's abundance of self-inflicted problems. Case in point: As a member of Congress, Hoekstra voted for the $700 billion bailout of the financial system in 2008. He voted again and again for budgets with big-time deficits ? trillions of dollars worth, over time. That's not exactly the fault of our "yellowgirl." Forget "Pete Spend-it-not." This big-spending Republican is more like "Pete Hoe Extra."

?

The truth is, blaming China or any other country for the loss of American jobs focuses on symptoms rather than disease. In our global economy, capital, given its greedy nature, flows to wherever it can reap the best profit. It is incumbent upon national governments to create attractive environments for investment. As for trade imbalance, the root cause is not currency manipulation, but economic ideology. As long as our national economic life is fixated on finance ? and Americans are more focused on buying mutual funds than on growing apple orchards in their backyards ?the traditional mode of production will take a backseat. Take GM. Prior to the banking crisis, the financial arm of the company, GMAC (now Ally Financial), had grown so big that its revenue exceeded the actual car-making business. When an automobile company makes more money in finance than in manufacturing, should we really be surprised to see the flight of manufacturing jobs?

The miraculous turnaround of GM ? it rose from near bankruptcy to become the No. 1 auto company in the world ? is not only a powerful testament to the importance of government and industry working together to create jobs. It also sheds light on the futility and irresponsibility of politicians who continue to bash China. It wasn't politically-motivated scapegoating of foreign automakers that fixed GM.

SEE MORE: Is China really on the verge of surpassing the U.S.?

?

But look at the GOP presidential field. Mitt Romney wants to wage a trade war with China. Not to be outdone, Rick Santorium simply wants to go to war with China: "I don't want to go to a trade war, I want to beat China. I want to go to war with China." Newt Gingrich has a bold plan for a moon colony, a pipe dream strongly motivated by the Cold War era desire to beat the Chinese. When Jon Huntsman withdrew from the race, Republicans lost the only candidate who had any credibility or capability of dealing with China as effectively as the Obama administration has.

The Obama approach is two-fold: On the one hand, he welcomes the rise of China, acknowledging its benefit to the United States and the world. On the other hand, he continues to chide and pressure China to play by the rules and to improve its human rights record. Criticism and competition are healthy. Bashing and warmongering are not. You can't blame a country for continuing to loan you money, buying up your Treasury bills to sustain your lavish lifestyle of deficit spending. You can't criticize a country for having a poor human rights record when your own companies, such as Apple and Cisco, are helping to fuel the rise of poor, exploitive working conditions at Chinese factories, or assisting to modernize the surveillance technology of Chinese police departments that crack down on the people.

It's time to lay off China. America has plenty of problems that need fixing. But pretending they're the fault of some menacing Red threat won't help us solve them.

Syria troops storm areas of Hama, Damascus

(AP)? Updated at 4:56 a.m. Eastern.

BEIRUT - An oil pipeline in the central Syrian city of Homs was attacked Wednesday, setting off a huge blaze, while regime troops stormed several residential neighborhoods in the nearby city of Hama, activists said.

The Local Coordination Committees and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Homs pipeline was in the rebel-held neighborhood of Baba Amr, which has been shelled by regime troops for the past 12 days.

The Observatory and the LCC also said that government forces launched a new operation Wednesday in another flashpoint city, Hama, after telephone, cellular lines and Internet connections were cut.

    Complete coverage: The Arab Spring

"Loud explosions were heard in the neighborhoods" of Hama, the Observatory said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Reuters news agency reported that elite Syrian soldiers had stormed at least one neighborhood in the eastern Damascus suburb of Barzeh, raiding homes in what local residents described as an attempt to locate opposition members and Syrian soldiers who have defected to the rebel Free Syrian Army.

Residents and activists told Reuters that troops from the Fourth Armoured Division and the Republican Guards had arrived with backup from armored personnel carriers and set up roadblocks in main streets of the Barzeh neighborhood of eastern Damascus.

CBS News' George Baghdadi says Barzeh has regularly seen such incursions by Syrian forces, and that there appeared to be little new in Wednesday's raids.

U.N.: Syria's crimes against humanity continue

Video by Homs activists broadcast on social networking sites showed thick black smoke billowing from what appeared to be a residential area in that city.

Scores of people were reportedly detained in the raids.

Homs is home to one of Syria's two oil refineries. It has also been one of the cities hardest hit by President Bashar Assad's crackdown on the popular uprising that began in March.

In the regime's latest move to try and quell the uprising by political means, Assad ordered a national referendum vote to be held Feb. 26 on a new draft constitution which would end his Baath party's monopoly on power in Syria.

The uprising started out as mostly peaceful protests against Assad's authoritarian rule, but has become more militarized in the face of the regime's brutal crackdown.

U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay told the General Assembly this week that more than 5,400 people were killed last year alone, and that the number of dead and injured continues to rise daily.

Syria's oil and gas pipelines have been attacked before during the 11-month uprising.

The state-run news agency, SANA, blamed "armed terrorists" for Wednesday's attack on the pipeline. It said the pipeline feeds the tankers in the Damascus suburb of Adra, which contribute in supplying gasoline to the capital and southern regions.

Assad's regime has long blamed "terrorists" and foreign conspiracies for the country's crisis, not protesters seeking democratic reforms. The revolt began with peaceful calls for democratic change, but has been morphing into a bloody, armed insurgency.

Learning to Write in American English Can Be Fun and Easy When ...

    Published by Robertson | February 13, 2012 | | 62

There are many ways to approach learning American English. The information I will be sharing was developed in the classroom by a teacher with many years of experience and found to be, after years of use and testing, one of the easiest and most effective methods available.

Writing or speaking in English can open up a very large audience for you to approach with your ideas and products. It can give you an increased number of people who you meet who then might be able to hear and understand you. If you are a student trying to take classes in an American College or University, it will help you learn more easily, in addition to more thoroughly understanding the material or subject you are learning about.

A pretest will give you the level you are currently spelling on so you know where to start. On the schedule you select you will be given a list of words plus sentences which will help you select the correct word because of the content of the other words in the sentence.

That allows you to learn how to use the word in a sentence.

Having more of a grasp of the words matched with content in the sentence speeds your ability to get conversational with English quickly in addition to learning how to spell. The easiest part of working with the basics of the English language is to feel comfortable with the way it is used which the sentence.

Since writing is just another form of speaking, you will also become a better writer more quickly. Just the confidence you gain is amazing. You can then relax and keep going with your project to learn English, write in English and look forward to connecting by sharing your ideas with many others around the world.

Investments, terms for loans, processes, and other parts of real estate is usually overwhelming to someone who hasn?t got a degree in real estate. For beginners, always remember to get the right appraisals if you?re looking for definitions. This will help you if you are researching for the right market for your property. Real Estate tips and services are available at?cambridge Real estate agent.

An appraisal consists of a professional opinion that is made in regards to property. An appraisal might be made according to different factors regarding the property sold. The advantage of an appraisal is that it gives conclusion of the real market value of the property. If the market price cannot be defined easily, then someone can look at the different parts of the property and ascertain what they feel the market price should be. An examiner will be looking completely through various mechanics usually unseen by many.

One of the necessary requirements when selling real estate property is an appraisal. Same thing goes when having your property financed or insured. It may use several external resources and definitions of what market value may include in relation to the opinion being made in order to determine the price value of a home. Expect the estimate to be based around the factors relating to the current market when getting an appraisal. In addition to checking the entire property, your appraiser will also check out every other factors that will have something to do with the property. One example is the neighborhood.

Evaluating a property is highly crucial in determining the real worth of your property in connection with your own needs on it. By observing the requirements that are set both in and out, you will have the opportunity to know when the timing is right to get involved with your piece of real estate.

Living Green With Pets: Flowers for Your Valentine ? The Creative Cat

cat sitting behind vase of flowers

Sophie is not eating the flowers! "The Perfect Camouflage", pastel ? B.E. Kazmarski

Apparently, you can?t go wrong with roses, either for your Valentine or for your kitty?as long as they don?t have thorns! The roses, I mean.

Many of the cautions in this article apply to dogs as well, but cats are a little more sensitive to certain plants?lilies, for instance, may give a dog a tummy ache but they may kill a kitty?plus kitties can jump and climb and get themselves into truly amazing places, so I am focusing on cats for this article. But for any pet, please be cautious of flowers and plants and keep the list of toxic species linked at the end handy.

pencil sketch of cat with flowers

Would a cat eat a daisy? Namir did. "Conversation With a Daisy", pencil ? B.E. Kazmarski

Cats aren?t necessarily particular in what greens they?ll nibble on; generally they?ll try anything green and fresh, and some cats will completely chew down a plant that can?t have tasted very good and wasn?t very easy to chew. They don?t stop with leaves, either, but will eat the petals off of a flower.

And while many pet owners know the dangers of various houseplants, most people don?t associate cut flowers with these dangers, yet many cut bouquets include flowers from? some of the most toxic plants for cats and dogs. What makes it complicated is that we recognize them when they are individual growing plants, but may not even notice them in a mixed bouquet.

Some plants cause gastric upset which can be a mess to clean up and is uncomfortable for your cat, but it can also have long-lasting effects such as ulcers in the mouth or digestive tract, and excessive vomiting or diarrhea can dehydrate and even kill a very young or old cat.

    white lilies

    Sunday Best

Other plants more seriously affect a cat?s organs and can be deadly within hours, even to a healthy cat.

    Lilies in all their forms

Lilies in just about all their species can cause kidney damage in cats which is permanent and can lead to kidney failure within 48 hours if left untreated.

    alstromeria

    Alstromeria

Sure, we know the big white lilies at Easter, but consider an everyday small grocery story bouquet: a few yellow mums, some white daisies, pink carnations, fern, baby?s breath and?alstromeria, a South American lily, which comes in colors from white to scarlet.

Or a medium-sized get-well bouquet: Yellow roses, white mums, blue larkspur and?two big pink Stargazer lilies.

And what used to be part of my favorite backyard bouquets in spring: pink climbing rose, red rambler rose, Shasta daisies, blue widow?s tears and?big orange daylilies.

    Bulb-forming plants

    purple tulips

    Purple Tulips

Instead of a bouquet of cut flowers we?ll often give or receive bulbs forced to bloom early in baskets and pots. I used to welcome the new year and the last long days of winter with forced bulbs all over my house as pots of paperwhite narcissus, trays of daffodils and baskets of mixed fragrant tulips, hyacinth and crocus along with squills and starflowers.

Then I learned that any part of these plants can not only cause gastric upset but also organ damage, specifically kidney damage and heart failure. I remembered a healthy fifteen-year-old cat I?d lost years before to acute kidney failure?her kidneys just failed one day and I had to put her to sleep the next. This can happen without an outside stimulus, but I?ll always wonder if that was the cause and I have never forced bulbs in any place my cats could get them since then.

In the same way, onion and garlic, also bulb-forming plants though they are considered food, are toxic to cats.

    Other plants

    rhododendron flowers

    Rhododendron

While most plants are not that immediately toxic, other plants, such as azalea and rhododendron, lily of the valley, ivy and yew can be deadly to cats in impaired health or kittens, since they?re small enough to get a big dose with an enthusiastic bite. Though not deadly for adult cats in good health, they?ll often cause extreme abdominal pain, nausea, salivation and vomiting. Repeated exposure can be cumulative with some plants.

    Sometimes cats have no sense

?Oh, she?ll stop eating if she gets sick,? or ?she won?t eat this, it?s got little thorns?, don?t believe that. I?ve seen cats try to eat cacti, drool while they are chewing aloe and vomit up philodendron and go back to eating again. Don?t rely on their non-existent common sense, just remove the plant.

You can?t really punish them for following both a natural impulse and a physical need. We don?t really know why cats, obligate carnivores with no obvious need for greens, chew on grass, but some guess they help cleanse their mouth and digestive system, and to add fiber to their primarily protein diet to aid in elimination. An indoor kitty will take what she can get to simulate the natural outdoor environment she craves.

The problem is that, while you may get some cats to stay away from your plants, most cats will return again and again, even if they suffer discomfort from their snack. The best way to keep your cats safe from plants is to put the plants completely out of reach?bearing in mind that cats can jump six times their height and can be ingenious about launching from strategic furniture to get into a hanging basket. Sometimes it is necessary to completely remove the plant from the house, no matter how much you like it.

Signs of plant poisoning may include vomiting, diarrhea, and swelling or pain inside the cat?s mouth. If you know or suspect which plant your cat has eaten, identify the plant by name when you call your veterinarian. Bring samples of the plant?s leaves or flowers when you take your cat to the veterinarian for treatment.

Keeping your cat out of your plants??

    Loo-See of the Jungle

What happened to that nice spider plant you used to have? Oops?while enjoying the scene out the window, Fluffy forgot it wasn?t just a clump of grass and chewed it down to little nubbins. Then, because it really wasn?t grass and really wasn?t digestible by her little system, she deposited it back on your carpet in a most inelegant manner.

And that wandering jew? She used it for a bed? I?ll bet she looked sweet.

A determined cat will do what she wants. Remember, you have to sleep some time.

As for the non-toxic flora, even though Fluffy won?t suffer if she chews on it (unless you get your hands on her), you still don?t want her shredding your greenery. Several commercial sprays will give the plant a bad smell and/or taste without damaging the plant with recommended use, and a nibble by Fluffy will not harm her. One product is ?Bitter Apple for Plants?, a stronger version of which is available for dogs learning not to chew on everything. Other products are named ?Off for Cats? and such like, and simply smell bad.

You can also try your own home brew by dabbing hot sauce on the tips of some of the leaves, or rubbing a citrus peel on the leaf. For the sake of your plants, however, just try it on one or two leaves to make sure you won?t fry the whole plant in an effort to keep Fluffy from eating it.

You could also place ?Sticky Paws? on the countertop around the arrangement or plant so that when she steps close to the plant she steps on the product and backs off; please read the instructions on the Sticky Paws package for what surfaces are appropriate for its use.

    Distractions

    peaches with cat greens

    Peaches with her Cat Greens

One other thing to help the situation?and it?s a nice thing to do for your cat even if you don?t have a plant problem?is to plant her own pot of greens and make it available to her at all times. Don?t use regular plant seeds such as grass seed because some seeds are treated with chemicals, at least check before you use them; instead, purchase ?cat greens?, usually a mixture of wheat, oats and barley grains, all three of which are not only a pleasure for your cat, but full of nutrition. Some other commercial ?cat greens? mixtures contain catnip, a sure winner, sage, parsley, chickweed, colt?s foot grass, and other herbs and wild plants that your cat would eat if outdoors.

Most of these plants can be grown in a small container on a windowsill, and if you keep two containers growing, one available to the cat and one just sprouting, you can have a constant treat for her. These plants need a good bit of sunlight to thrive, so try to find a sunny spot that your cat can get to. It will serve two purposes: because she tends to chew when she?s gazing at the outdoors, you?ve provided exactly what she needs for her little interlude.

Keep toxic plant and flower information handy

Your local veterinarians and shelters often have lists of toxic flora has handouts, and plenty of resources exist on the internet.

And as far as those flowers, you just can?t go wrong with roses!

About facades for redecorating - Alaska Bird Seed

    Sunday, February 12th, 2012 at 10:34 am ?

Every good realtor knows that even small improvements for the front of the household, like a new bed of flowers, shutters, or even a brand new mailbox make a big difference. A new garage door could add $10,500-$20,000 to your selling price of a home.

One thing that I love to recommend to homeowners is they put up a stone or brick facade alongside along the base of the home. Perhaps, up to the actual Windows along the frontage of the home. This makes the home look a lot more valuable and more substantial, as well as sturdier. Stone and brick facades are not high priced to put up in case you use the proper materials they are long-lasting.

It is significant of course to ensure that the coating of these kind of materials is also a powerful enough to handle almost any hard water spots from the sprinklers. Sometimes it?s the tiny things you do to dress up your home, that make the biggest difference. Your neighbors will definitely notice.

Actually, if you put stone or brick on your house, you can definitely find out that other folks in the neighborhood get and do the very same when they find out and about how little it prices. This can increase the buying price of the entire neighborhood with regard to everyone?s home. As when a home sells it allows the average appraisal importance of each home in the area go up slightly. When i surely hope you will certainly think about this.

Concrete floor fiber siding is very popular for new commercial and also home builders, as you?ll be able to use and does not have the problems of other designs of siding. Fiber bare concrete exterior siding is just about the most durable and versatile constructing materials around. And Concrete siding costs are much less than their wood house siding or aluminum siding costs. Indeed, it can contend head-to-head using vinyl siding costs, which is much stronger, easy to use, and looks more considerable too.

Cement siding regarding businesses is perhaps the most frequent usage for fiber concrete board siding. Of study course, cement housing siding is becoming popular in recent several years with the huge uptick in home making before the global property crisis came about. 1 company Certainseed Fiber looks like it?s rocking the market together with low-cost and robustly durable cement dietary fiber board material siding.

You should understand that the times of asbestos fiber cement table are long gone, no asbestos is used within the creation or manufacturing connected with cement fiber board home siding now days. Home general contractors prefer it due to cost, ease of installment and the rapid speed it allows when concluding a home or building. The installing of dietary fiber cement siding is easy and any do-that-yourself homeowner with a small amount of self confidence and pull it off, whether installing new bare cement siding or replacing your cement housing siding on their residence.

Fiber cement property siding is perhaps the best longterm option for a number of reasons; cost, simplicity, strength, and time. If you are serious about re-siding your house with vinyl, wood, or perhaps aluminum, then maybe it is best to take a look at the cement siding option before you make your final decision. Make sure you think on this. Fotos fachadas de casas.

Centre of Excellence in Farm Business Managment, Facebook ...

Hi from Massey University, Palmerston North, & Lincoln University, Christchurch, New Zealand where this blog will now be written & produced on a regular basis. http://www.massey.ac.nz/massey/home.cfm
    http://www.lincoln.ac.nz/
I have recently moved back to New Zealand after a 30 year period of working overseas as a dairy consultant in Australia, UK & France. The blog has been produced in Europe but will now come from the southern hemisphere.
I?ve joined the new ?Centre of Excellence in Farm Business Management? which is currently funded by the NZ dairy industry & both Massey & Lincoln Universities. Hopefully the other agricultural sectors in NZ will also be involved with the Centre shortly. The Centre is a virtual Centre of Excellence (no bricks & mortar) of the Farm Management Staff at both Universities working together (a joint project) to improve the capability in Farm Management within NZ. We aim to be a serious player in Global Best Practice in Farm Management Research & Education.

I will regularly write about progress in these Research Projects & the Professional Development courses we are developing. I won?t be waiting until they are completed but report on progress to date?..why? I believe it is really important firstly that agricultural research is effective in visible change on farms?.for that to happen, farmers & rural professionals need to engage all the way through the process to buffer, blunt, reshape & constructively be part of what I call ?The Widget Making Team?. Otherwise the research ?widget? will be deemed useless by the farmers & sent to the rubbish bin. Farmers need to both voice their opinions & have their expertise recognised & clearly heard.
My role with the Centre (CEFBM) is partly research, some teaching but mainly communication from the Universities to farmers, farming families, staff & the rural professionals that deliver professional services to the farming communities.

I sadly don?t speak Spanish nor they much English. You might quite rightly think that was a recipe for disaster (for my first University lecture) but NO because we started to talk about Facebook. Facebook is the social media of the young (& not so young). A quick survey revealed that 100% of the students use facebook. Now we were on the same wavelength & both talking with passion?..we were now understanding each other!

I asked (through Massey University?s International student support team who translated) how many of their parents used facebook (Can you imagine the ?what are you for real?..looks). The answer, about 10% of the Uruguayan agricultural students? parents were on facebook! That clearly illustrates why today we need to use social media to communicate with the young agriculturists & young well educated farmers who are the face of today & tomorrows food through out the world.

The Uruguayan students & I discussed what role Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, blogs, google, wiki spaces might have in communicating global best practice farm management to farmers & the general public.

?IF I CAN TALK TO THE WORLD (by using social media) YOU ALSO CAN TALK TO THE WORLD ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY, YOUR AGRICULTURE, YOUR FARM & YOUR FOOD? In fact not only can you but you must as city separates from country & consumers become removed from farmers & food production.

Judge for yourself?..despite language differences DID we communicate with each other? Sorry Vice Chancellor?.yes I did instruct them to turn on their mobile phones, cameras & make a hell of a lot of noise (probably against all the rules of the University) but it was a lot of fun?.thank you fellow students! Great!

I have to confess also that when I was an AgSc student at Massey University back in the 1970s I got seriously offside with the then VC Dr Alan Stewart?..for erecting illegal ramps around the campus for disabled students access (in particular a fellow agricultural student who became a quad during his studies & struggled to get to lecture rooms because of poor disabled access (it was the 1970s)). The fact that our ramps looked remarkably similar to materials off the university farms was probably quite obvious to Dr Stewart too. However the good news is that I was allowed to complete my degree & the University erected proper Disabled Access everywhere?..& today would be very proud that they have good access for all students?.little does the current admin realise it all started with fence posts knicked off the University farms!

I think it?s great that today, agricultural students get a chance to travel the world & come to NZ to look at our internationally respected farm business management. Both Massey & Lincoln offer postgraduate scholarships in Farm Business Management, so I hope some of my new best friends (NBFs) from Uruguay might consider studying here in NZ. Uruguay & NZ are already working together including AgResearch projects in Uruguay.

So getting back to my role at the ?Centre of Excellence in Farm Business Management?, it?s essentially communication. I?m the interface & we intend using every social media tool available to us to talk as often as we can with farmers. We will use Facebook, Youtube, Webinars, Wiki Spaces, Twitter?.you name it?if it?s effective we will use it. The Centre CEFBM will have a website shortly.

By the way the Vice Chancellor at Massey University Steve Maharey also uses Twitter. @SteveMaharey.

I strongly believe that farmers need to become ?advocates? for their own Global Best Practice, their farming industries & the food they produce. We can?t rely on outside PR agencies to promote or defend farmers & excellent farm management practices. We must do it ourselves. I want to help farmers become ?Farming Advocates?. If I can talk to the world YOU also can talk to the world?..& you must!

Woolly mammoth caught on video? It looks fishy

According to a story in The Sun newspaper, a new video has surfaced that seems to show a live woolly mammoth ? an animal the scientists say has been extinct for about four millennia.

The "jaw-dropping" footage, which shows a dark, blurry creature crossing a river, was allegedly "caught by a government-employed engineer last summer in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region of Siberia."

    1. More science news from msnbc.com

      1. Our planet's next supercontinent will amaze you

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: A new computer model suggests that the Arctic Ocean and Caribbean Sea will be among the first things to go when the next supercontinent is formed.

      2. Research shows you'll want to tweet this post
      3. Russian scientists reach lake under Antarctica
      4. Dogs understand us better than chimps do

The video has stirred up plenty of interest on the Web. Most viewers have settled on one of two explanations for the mysterious video ? though neither includes a woolly mammoth.

Many believe the video is an outright hoax ? a computer-generated elephant or mammoth digitally inserted into the scene. Those who smell a hoax point to several suspicious aspects of the video, including the fact that the man who posted the piece, a paranormal enthusiast named Michael Cohen, has been involved with several other videos of UFOs and other phenomena that are of questionable authenticity.

The brevity of the video also casts suspicion on its validity. The video is less than 10 seconds long, and ends well before the animal reaches the near shore. It's hard to imagine that a nearby person wouldn't notice a woolly mammoth until it started walking across the river, and it's even more unbelievable that the anonymous cameraman would inexplicably stop filming after 10 seconds. [If You Spot Bigfoot, Should You Shoot Him?]

The second theory is that the video is real, but that the creature is just a bear with a large fish in its mouth. That would explain its relatively small size for a mammoth, the shape of the "trunk" on its head, and the color. According to this explanation, the cameraman was simply fooled by the strange shape.

There is a third explanation, which combines the two previous ones: It is both a bear and a fake; the videographer knew very well what it was, since his vision would be far better than anything we see captured on the video. He (or possibly someone else who later obtained the video) decided to present the video as a mystery for a bit of fun or publicity.

Derek Serra, a Hollywood video-effects artist who has previously analyzed faked UFO videos, told Life's Little Mysteries that the video, in his opinion, appears to have been intentionally blurred, probably to obscure the animal's true identity.

"Even low-resolution cameras can focus fairly well on something," Serra said. "But there's really nothing in this video in focus. The rocks in the foreground have a blur to them that doesn't seem natural."

Adding to the mystery, if the video was shot last summer as claimed, why is it only being seen now? Why did the Russian engineer keep such an amazing discovery quiet for half a year instead of going public with the biggest science story of the century?

Though the animal is almost certainly not a woolly mammoth, one final intriguing mystery remains: Where did the photographer find a video camera able to take such remarkably low-quality images?

Frozen desserts: Mousse, bombes & parfaits (1921) | Archive ...

Mousse, parfait or bombe ? and when are they served?

    by Florence Margaret Lee

For the very extra occasion when the daintiest of frozen desserts is desired, or when there is a convalescent in the house and only a little need be prepared, or when there is no ice cream freezer, it is then that we choose the mousse or parfait. In the delicacy of the mixture (the feathery texture which the whipped cream gives, as well as the richness), this differs from the ice cream and sherbets and the extra expense is justified.

Molds of every size and shape which have a water-tight cover can be used, or even a glass jar?will?serve for the freezing of mousses and parfaits, since there is no turning to be done, as in a freezer. The mousse is made usualiy of whipped cream flavored or?combined?with fruit pulp, while the parfait has an egg foundation, the sugar and?liquid?being made into a syrup, then poured over the beaten eggs.

    Raspberry mousse recipe

Ingredients: 1 pint cream, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 cup sieved raspberries, 1 tablespoonful lemon juice.

Wash and put the berries through a sieve. Stir in the sugar and lemon juice if desired; then fold in the whipped cream. Place in a mold and bury in ice and freezing salt for two hours. Serve with a garnish of raspberries and whipped cream. An apricot, strawberry or peach mousse made in the same way will be equally delicious. If a large mold of mousse is made allow from three to four hours for freezing.

Your fireless cooker or a large icebox is an excellent place to put the mousse and ice during the freezing, for if left where the ice will melt rapidly it must be drained and repacked. This should be done when the ice begins to float on the surface of the water, for after that the temperature will begin to rise.

    Angel parfait

Ingredients:?1 cup sugar, 2 cups of double cream, 1/2 cup boiling water, 2 or 3 teaspoonfuls vanilla, 2 egg whites

Boil the sugar and water?to?238 degrees F?(until it threads) and pour?it in a fine?stream?over the stiffly-beaten egg whites. Beat constantly until cold, then flavor and fold in the whipped cream. Pack and freeze as a mousse.

This the French flavor with wine instead of vanilla, mold in a tall, slender peak and serve as ?Dame Blanche.? (Of historic interest rather than practical value.)

Half a cup (about four) stale macaroons crushed to a powder, or half a cup of maraschino cherries, chopped, or both, may replace the vanilla in the angel parfait. Garnish with macaroons, cherries and whipped cream in serving.

    Packing the molds

First, be sure that the cover fits tightly. A wise precaution is to fill the mold very full, then a layer of waxed paper (or even a buttered one with buttered side up) over the top; put on the cover and let some of the mixture be forced down the sides. Bury this in ice and salt. The proportion of ice and salt differs from that used for ice cream, as the texture sought is different. The larger the proportion of ice the finer will be the texture (and the longer to freeze). So instead of the three to one used for the ice cream, use four parts ice to one part salt for a mousse.

    Frozen bombes

To make a bombe, that frozen work of art that the amateur approaches with awe, first bury the mold in ice and salt until well chilled, then remove and line with the frozen sherbet or ice cream to the width of about one inch. Then fill the center with either whipped cream sweetened and flavored or with a different frozen mixture. Leave space enough on top to cover with the lining mixture. Fill to overflowing and follow directions for packing and freezing of a mousse.

To be most successful, choose contrasting colors as well as flavors that combine well in making a bombe. A strawberry, raspberry or grape juice sherbet lining will give rich, beautiful color contrasts with the white whipped cream center, as well as a dessert to be dreamed over!

Chocolate ice cream as the lining, with whipped cream and chopped candied cherries in a cylindrical mold, is one of the best combinations.

Unmold by first carefully wiping the salt water from the mold, then dipping for a moment in warm (not hot) water before sliding the bombe into position on the serving dish. If the water is too hot or the mold remains in too long, the edges of the frozen shape will be lost. While the glass preserving jar will be found convenient for?freezing?the small quantity made just for the invalid, on account of the small top this cannot be unmolded whole.

The Politics of Contraception: How a Health Insurance Controversy Could Shape the Election (Time.com)

According to a memo published by the moderate think tank, Third Way, and?highlighted by The New Yorker?s Ryan Lizza,?the 2012 election will come down to a fight over truly independent voters who cast ballots for Obama in 2008. If Obama can hang on to these voters, he wins. If he cedes too many to Mitt Romney, he loses. Other factors like turnout will come into play, but the document suggests that one of the Obama campaign?s central tasks will be to persuade its former supporters to back the candidate again.

The Obama Administration?s recent decision to require Catholic universities and hospitals to include coverage for contraceptives in their health insurance plans appears to fit into a strategy to do just that.

The Third Way memo, written by Michelle Diggles and Lanae Erickson, says the ?Obama Independents? are disproportionately:

    -moderate
    -concerned with the economy
    -hit hard by the recession
-truly swing voters (more voted for Republican candidates in 2010 than 2008 McCain voters supported Democrats)
    -female
    -racially diverse
    -young
    -less religious
-more personally connected to their candidate

This provides some clues to the Obama re-election strategy, namely that the campaign is already courting young, more secular women ? exactly the cohort that could be won over by the Administration?s recent decision to require Catholic universities and hospitals to provide employee health insurance plans covering contraception. A new poll from the Public Religion Research Institute provides more support for this strategy, noting that 58% of Millennials say ?religiously affiliated colleges and hospitals should have to provide coverage that includes contraception,? while 54% of women feel this way. In addition, the PRPI poll found that more than half (52%) of Catholics agree.

As Kathleen Hennessey and Christi Parsons recently reported in the Los Angeles Times:

Democratic strategists think voters who oppose President Obama because of the birth-control rule wouldn?t have voted for him anyway.

    (snip)

Aligning himself with the interests of women is crucial if Obama is to win a second term. He garnered 53% of women voters in 2008, besting McCain by 13 percentage points. In 2010, when Republicans took control of the House, that edge evaporated and women were essentially evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats. Recent polling shows the gender gap in Democrats? favor has reemerged.

Hennessey and Parsons also report that Administration officials are defending the decision on Catholic universities and hospitals by saying it protects the rights of employees of those organizations, many of whom are not Catholic. However, the health insurance plans (and prescription drugs plans) offered by Catholic institutions, like any other employer, are often partly funded by the institutions themselves.

(MORE:?Obama Flip-Flops on Super PACs. Now He Is Consistent.)

Lest there be any doubt that the Obama folks see this as a political issue worth highlighting, the campaign just put out a side-by-side comparison of the Massachusetts health plan?s contraception coverage rules and those of the Affordable Care Act. Romneycare/Obamacare ? it seems birth control coverage is another issue where it?s hard to see daylight between the two.

Kia Optima Earns Kiplinger's Personal Finance ... - Payday Loans UK

    IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ ?
Recognized by the editors at Kiplinger?s Personal Finance as a 2012 Best New Car Value, the Kia Optima has been ranked ?Best in Class? in the $25,000-$30,000 sedan category. Kiplinger?s editors sort through hundreds of contenders to reveal the best values in its annual buyer?s guide. Winners are selected in 12 categories for Best in Class, Best New model, Best Resale and Most Fuel Efficient. Within the categories, each vehicle is ranked by performance, value, safety, roominess and driving impressions. Accolades for the Optima, such as Kiplinger?s ?Best in Class? award, helped the stylish mid-size sedan become the top-selling Kia model in January with more than 8,800 units sold.

?The Optima continues to attract new customers to the brand with the right balance of value, performance, fuel economy and modern amenities that consumers are looking for,? said Michael Sprague, vice president of marketing communications, Kia Motors America. ?The mid-size sedan segment is more competitive than ever, and Kiplinger?s recognition of the Optima is tangible evidence that Kia?s momentum continues.?

Kiplinger?s editors found the Optima?s sharp creases, wraparound head lights and aggressive front end to make a bold styling statement. ?The available turbo-boosted four-cylinder engine puts out more horsepower than most in its class and it?s a difference you?ll feel on the road,? said Jessica Anderson, Associate Editor of Kiplinger?s Personal Finance. ?Add in value pricing and loads of standard features and you?ve got serious swagger.?

The monthly Kiplinger?s Personal Finance magazine advises its readers on managing their money, covering investing, retirement planning, taxes, insurance, real estate, buying and leasing a car, health care, travel and financing college.

    About the 2012 Optima

The 2012 Kia Optima stands apart from the crowd with its head-turning design, fun-to-drive performance, modern amenities and long list of standard safety features. Kia?s second U.S.-built[1] vehicle offers drivers cutting-edge technologies, including a standard eight-speaker Infinity?[2] audio system, HD Radio(TM)[3], and Kia?s UVO powered by Microsoft?[4] voice-activated infotainment and communications system with a starting MSRP of $19,500[5].

    Kia?s Unprecedented Growth

Kia Motors is the one of the world?s fastest moving global automotive brands; from 2009-2011 Kia launched more new vehicles in the U.S. than any other automaker, and under the guidance of chief design officer Peter Schreyer earned a reputation as an industry leader in automotive styling. Kia Motors America?s full line of fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive cars and CUVs has earned critical acclaim and dramatically increased consumer awareness, perception and consideration for the brand. In 2011, KMA recorded its 17th consecutive year of market share growth, thanks in part to the largest increase of any major brand in perceived quality[6] and the industry?s highest brand loyalty ranking[7]. Kia?s U.S.-based manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia ? KMMG ? is responsible for the creation of more than 10,000 plant and supplier jobs and builds the company?s two best-selling vehicles in the U.S. ? the Sorento CUV and Optima midsize sedan[8]. Kia?s value and technology-laden 2012 model year lineup also includes the Sportage compact CUV, Soul urban passenger vehicle, Optima Hybrid, Forte compact sedan, Forte 5-door compact hatchback, Forte Koup two-door coupe, all-new Rio and Rio 5-door sub-compacts and Sedona minivan.

Green Buildings ? Making Your Home Work for ... - Sustainable Living

    Fundamentals of a Green Building

The fundamentals of green buildings include managing air flow, best practices in storm water management, rainwater harvesting, using alternative energy such as wind and solar power, using low toxicity sealants, paints and other chemicals, or even having a kitchen recycle center in a home.

Good construction designs, ventilation and insulation systems that allow dynamic ventilation, cooling and heating to optimize energy flow are a must in green buildings. Choosing and using the right construction materials that make for comfortable and clean buildings are at the core of the green concept. The EPA Guiding Principles for Federal Leadership in High Performance and Sustainable Buildings provides a good framework for green buildings.

    Benefits of a Green Home

With the rising costs of energy, it makes sense to go for green buildings that look at efficient insulation and energy conservation, resulting in long term savings for both owners and the environment. It is a known fact that green homes can end up being 30-50% more energy efficient than conventionally built homes. Imagine the savings in energy bills alone!

While people building new homes may argue that green homes cost more, on applying the project life cycle for analyzing the cost of a green home you will realize that the overall cost of the project in its entire life cycle actually saves you much more by way of operating costs over the years.

An integrated and comprehensive home design will result in comfort, durability, energy savings, and an overall improvement in the health of the occupants. Green buildings provide their owners benefits such as long term cost savings, peace of mind and better performance over time. They are aesthetically pleasing, durable and easy to maintain. Over a period of time, incorporating green in your homes can reap you health benefits.

Green home plans also reduce waste in land fills, reduce pollution, reduce water wastage, preserve the natural environment and help maintain the ecosystem inside and outside the home and its surroundings. Thus they are smart investments that result in environmental protection too.

    Tax Credits

For homes that have seen some sort of improvement by way of an improved heating/cooling system, replacement windows or better insulation, homeowner tax credits are available up to a cap of $500 for the 2-year tax assessment period from January 1st, 2006 to December 31st, 2007. Installing a solar heating system using photovoltaic cells will earn you a 30% tax credit for a system purchase up to a cost cap of $2,000. Such systems must have been ?placed in service? in 2006 or 2007. This is not inclusive of the $500 tax rebate that is in place for home improvements.

    Improved Resale Value

A certified green home that has an integrated design of conservation and environmental sustainability will offer improved resale value to the homeowner looking to dispose of it.

    Remodeling

What will it take to make the house you own green? Remodeling an existing building to a green one takes time, resources and commitment. The best approach in such a situation is to take it a step at a time ? convert one part of the building before going on to the next. Think about choosing materials that can at the very least be partially recycled when the time comes to discard them. This will enable you to conserve natural or virgin raw materials.

Any way you look at it, green homes are catching on real fast as they bring in plenty of benefits that are immediate and long term in nature. So whether you are a buyer of a home or thinking of remodeling, you can rest assured that a green home will ?work? for you. In addition, your green home will help you leave a legacy for generations to come ? environmentally.
