Governments Are Not Applying Religious Fairness Equally (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The Obama administration attempted to force Catholic employers to provide birth control and Christians in general to provide morning after abortion pills as part of his health care power grab, in violation of their religious values. Democrats in several states are trying to pass laws allowing gay marriage (a sacred rite, not a civil right) and Christians are being banned from renting space in New York schools.

These are the usual attacks on religion, especially Christianity, by the left. Why, then, is Islam getting another pass?

Fox News reported Wednesday that a Grand Junction, Colo., high school student had to quit singing in the choir due to the school officials' insistence that the choir sing a song praising Allah.

The song "Zikr" contained the lyric, "there is no truth except Allah."

The student sent an email to school officials outlining his objection to being forced to sing a song "worshiping another God, and even worshiping another prophet."

School officials defended the song. District spokesman Jeff Kirtland told Fox News, "Choral music is often devoted to religious themes," and that the choir "is a voluntary, after-school activity."

The Staten Island Real Time News reported that Monday was the first day of a city-mandated ban on Christian groups renting school buildings after hours in New York, where the public can voluntarily attend.

Jane Gordon, senior counsel with the NYC Law Department, stated, "We view this as a victory for the city's school children and their families. The Department was quite properly concerned about having any school in this diverse city identified with one particular religious belief or practice."

There is, however, a publicly funded purely Islamic school in Brooklyn. The Khalil Gibran International Academy opened in 2007 was aggressively promoted by New York City School Chancellor, Joel Klein, according to the Catholic News. Klein was reported to have banned Christian students from displaying a Nativity scene previously.

The Liberty Tribune reports that the miscreants and malcontents at the ACLU objected to a Christian concert held recently in Kansas City because city officials promoted it as they would with any other event and city officials kowtowed to them. There was no outcry from the ACLU in 2007 when the city installed Muslim foot baths in the airport at taxpayer expense.

The point of my commentary is not to decry the Muslim faith, as some on the left will surely claim, but a call for the fairness the left claims to stand for.

The left's misinterpretation of the First Amendment's "establishment clause" either applies to all or applies to none. Either you are against religion or you are not, no exceptions.

The loathing and bigotry of the left against all things Judeo-Christian while bending over backward to accommodate atheists and Muslims is hypocritical at best and obviously intentional. This will only get worse if Obama and his adherents remain in power.

Collectivism and progressivism are incompatible with Christianity. They seek to destroy what they can of it and usurp the rest.
